NBC World Series Day 3

Day 3 of the NBC College World Series in Wichita, Kansas is in the books. This week and most of next, we will be be giving you updates on the scores from the previous day. Some of the top players from many Pac 10, Big West, West Coast Conference, Big 12, Missouri Valley, WAC, Mountain West and CUSA are here at this tournament.

Summer Collegiate baseball draws big crowds throughout the country, yet many fans of the game are unaware of the teams and it's importance because most of the teams are in small towns from east to west. Our job is to keep you in the loop. Here are yesterdays scores...

....Morning rain and thunder doesn’t stop the NBC. A’s scored first with a run in the bottom of the 1st, but the Collegians respond with a run in the top of the 2nd. In the bottom of the 4th A’s #21 hits triple to empty bases and scores 2 runs to take a 3-1 lead. The Collegians have an explosive 3 run 6th, with a double by # 9 over a leaping first baseman the Collegian’s scores 1 and put another runner on third who is then driven in by the next batter #21 tying the game at 3 all. #7 then drives in the go-a-head run giving Katy the lead 4-3. Bottom 7th Clarinda responds with a triple by #40 tying the game 4 all with no outs, #5 drives in the go-a-head run Clarinda leads 5-4, A’s score 1 more run to push the lead to 6-4. Clarinda win 6-4 Katy eliminated.

....After the unorthodox decision by Crestview manager Bill Storrs to choose the visitor’s roll after winning the coin flip, both teams begin by playing small ball by combining for 3 sac bunts in the first 2 innings. In the third, with no out, Crestview loads the bases with 2 easy singles and a walk, however Rock City’s pitcher Ben Moore gets out of the jam with a pop out and a timely double play…Rock City’s second, inning ending double play. In the bottom of the 4th, Rock City finally gets runs on the board after loading the bases with no out. They score 5, with the first coming on an unadvised fielding of a soon to be foul ball. The last four come on two run singles from Josh Montague and Jeremy Peed. Crestwood answers with 2 runs in the top of the 5th. After moving runners to 2nd and 3rd with a sac bunt, a wild pith scores Eric DeBlank and a sac fly by Randy Molina scores Anthony Albano. Crestwood continued to close the gap by scoring 2 in the top of the 7th. DeBlank walked, stole 2nd and was batted in on Albano’s triple down the first base line. A ground ball out scored Albano bringing the score to 5-4 at the 7th inning stretch. 5-4 is as close as Crestwood can get as Rock City wins it and advances to play on Friday the winner of the Liberal BeeJays and San Diego Waves game. Crestwood will play the San Antonio Titans on Thursday.

....The boys from Kansas fell behind early but the Liberal BeeJays beat the San Diego Waves 8-4. The Waves took an early 1-0 lead after the first but the BeeJays fired back with three runs in the third inning. The BeeJays last played against the Fairbanks Goldpanners in a exhibition match victory. An eighth inning rally by the Waves - scoring three runs but them back in the lead but the BeeJays would also have a tremendous eighth inning where they scored five runs. Those five runs came off a pitching meltdown by the Waves, in a sequence where one man was already on base a batter was hit, the next better was walked - followed up by a base hit to mid right field, an infield hit to center right and a powerful blast that resulted in a triple and sent in two runners off a fielding error. The Waves had no answer in the ninth and fell four runs short in the end.
